Smiling woman flossing her teethInvisalign is a discrete and comfortable alternative to metal braces. Not only is it virtually invisible when worn over your teeth, but you don’t have to deal with the restrictions or hassle of brackets and wires. You won’t have to worry about special dental products or a lengthy oral hygiene routine. However, brushing and flossing are more important than ever before. Here’s what you need to know to ensure you are cleaning your mouth effectively to avoid unnecessary complications during your orthodontic journey.

Importance of Good Oral Hygiene

When benefiting from any orthodontic treatment, you must step up your oral hygiene habits, especially with clear aligners. Food residue, plaque, and bacteria can get trapped between your aligners and your enamel if you don’t keep your mouth clean. This can cause cavities and gum disease. Not to mention, it can cause your aligners to discolor, so they are more noticeable while you’re wearing them. It can also damage your aligners over time and cause them to have an unpleasant odor.

In addition to brushing and flossing at night, it’s important to clean your teeth after every time you eat or drink. It’s wise to rinse your aligners before putting them in your mouth. They should also be soaked daily in an Invisalign cleaning solution to kill any bacteria lingering on your aligners.

Brushing Isn’t Enough

Your toothbrush is the most frequently used item you have at home to keep your teeth clean. Although it is effective, your toothbrush isn’t enough to keep your mouth healthy.

While brushing your teeth for 2 minutes will remove food residue and plaque, your toothbrush can’t reach between your teeth. Brushing alone can leave up to 40% of your teeth surfaces uncleaned. Flossing is the only way to remove the buildup your toothbrush can’t reach.

Flossing with Invisalign

Flossing with Invisalign is easy because you don’t have to thread floss through brackets or wires. After removing your aligners and brushing your teeth, use about 12 to 18 in of waxed dental floss. Insert it between two teeth and form a “C” shape around one tooth. Gently slide the floss up to your gum line and down to the crown of your tooth. Repeat this process for every tooth.

A water flosser is another method to floss your teeth. Gentle water rinses away food and plaque to keep your mouth healthy.

In addition to brushing and flossing, you still need to visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll provide the care you need to keep common dental issues at bay to ensure your orthodontic treatment stays on track.
