Have you been putting off your wisdom tooth extraction for long enough, but finding it difficult to commit to undergoing the procedure during the summer? The thought of losing out on some time for soaking up the sunshine can keep you from scheduling your appointment, but the reality is that recovery is relatively short, and waiting longer to have your procedure could put you in a predicament. Read on to learn about the recovery process and the benefits of having your wisdom teeth extracted in the summer.

How Long Does It Take to Heal from Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Your recovery timeline can depend on a number of factors, like how well you follow your dentist’s post-operative instructions, like eating a soft diet. Fortunately, the average recovery time takes between one and two weeks, with most people only being required to take off a day from work before they feel well enough to return. Typically, side-effects are mild and can include some bleeding, discomfort, and occasionally, swelling.

The Benefits of Summertime Wisdom Tooth Extraction

There are several benefits that you’ll be able to enjoy by deciding to have your wisdom teeth extracted in the summer, including:

  • No Rushed Recovery: Whether you have a full-time job or you’re a student, typically, summer is the best time to take off and recover because it’s the slowest time of the year. This can help you feel like you’re not missing out!
  • Easier to Schedule Your Procedure: You may find it easier to schedule your wisdom tooth extraction during the summertime than the year.
  • No Need to Worry About School: If you’re taking classes at college or in high school, you won’t need to worry about the stress of homework and studying if you have your wisdom teeth removed during summer break.
  • Relax & Enjoy Plenty of Cold Treats: You’ll need to maintain a soft diet, and the summer heat can make that much more enjoyable! Eating cold treats like smoothies, popsicles, and ice cream can not only help minimize swelling and make your healing period more comfortable, but it can also make you feel like you’re not missing out!
  • Enjoy the Company of Friends & Family: Because many people have extra time off during the summer, or that’s the slowest part of their year, you may be able to enjoy the company of your friends and family still as you’re recovering.
  • Waiting Can Complicate Your Procedure: The longer you wait to have your wisdom teeth extracted, the more complicated your procedure can be.

Tips for Making a Speedy Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery

Even if you opt to have your wisdom teeth removed in the summertime, by taking good care of your smile after your procedure, you won’t miss out on much. You can make a complete recovery from your treatment in as little as a week when you follow your dentist’s post-operative instructions. These typically include:

  • Take any prescribed or recommended medications as directed to help with discomfort.
  • Maintain a soft diet for several days following your procedure, or for as long as is directed by your dentist.
  • Reduce swelling by placing a cold compress on the outside of your face for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off.
  • Come in for your follow-up appointment to make sure everything is healing properly.

If at any point throughout your process you have concerns or questions, never hesitate to reach out to your dental team.

By having your wisdom teeth extracted in the summer, not only will you still be able to get the most out of the season, but you’ll also be able to rest easy knowing your wisdom teeth won’t be able to cause harm to your smile.
