While most people tend to focus on their teeth when they think about oral health or the appearance of their smile, the gums are actually just as important! When the gums are infected, they can become sensitive, swollen, and even start to recede! If you develop gum disease, we can provide multiple forms of periodontal therapy in Mt. Pleasant, WI to get your gum health on the right track. Give us a call if your gums are red or often bleed whenever you clean your teeth!
Scaling is the process of removing bacteria-filled plaque and tartar from above and beneath the gum line that is the root cause of gum disease. This can’t be cleaned using a regular brush, which is why at-home care is not enough to treat gum disease. Root planing involves smoothing out the tooth roots so the gums can heal and firmly reattach to the teeth, which helps prevent reinfection.
To kill any bacteria in your gums leftover after scaling and root planing, we apply antibiotics directly to the pockets that form in the gums as a result of the infection. Over the course of a week, these dissolve and seep inside of the tissue, eliminating bacteria hidden deep below the gum line while also reducing the size of the troublesome pockets.
